Frequently Asked Questions
Are your classes truly hands-on?
Yes! You will not have to take turns working on small parts of the menu or simply watch a teacher demonstrating techniques. The format is fully hands-on. You will be oriented to the kitchen and learn some safety basics to working with others in a kitchen and immediately begin preparing the menu. Each student will have their own station in the kitchen with easy access to a stove and oven as well as most small equipment.
How long do the classes last?
Most classes are designed to run about two and a half hours if they start on time. Half an hour is reserved at the end of class to enjoy your meal, ask questions and get to know your fellow classmates. You are welcome to stay longer!
Will food be served during class?
Yes. Most classes begin with some light appetizers, you are welcome to eat as you cook, and the class concludes with a full meal that you have prepared. Most classes end with enough food for students to bring some of their work home to share with friends or family.
Are beverages included?
Non-alcoholic beverages are included as well as any alcohol used in the recipes. You are welcome to bring wine or beer as well.
How many students are in a class?
Because our format is fully hands-on we are limited to eight students. Many classes are smaller and private classes as small as one-on-one are available. Larger group events are occasionally hosted but usually with a different format.
How do you accommodate larger groups?
During warmer weather we can accommodate groups of up to twelve people with outdoor seating for the meal. We do not put more than eight students in a regularly scheduled class. For groups larger than twelve we host culinary parties and events such as tasting parties (where you can learn all about a particular food, wine or other beverage), Iron Chef Competitions, and The Exquisite Course event which focuses on team dynamics and can accommodate groups of up to 24 people.
Are private classes for small groups available?
Yes. If you have a small group that would like a fun and informative private class, please contact us. We also offer cooking classes for individuals and couples that are personalized to meet your individual needs. For a selection of classes you can visit our course listings and choose from any course listed or you can request a particular subject.

Will you offer particular classes again?
Yes. We try to offer our classes on a regular basis. If there is a particular class you are interested in, please contact us and we would be happy to schedule it.
If I don’t know how to cook at all, is there a good class to start with?
Our How to Cook series is offered regularly and covers basic cooking techniques and ingredients. You may also enjoy the Knife Skills Workshop which will greatly improve your speed in the kitchen. Knife skills are the first thing students learn at professional cooking schools and will make prep work not only faster but more enjoyable.
I cook a lot, is there a good class for someone who wants to learn culinary school level cooking?
We try to offer at least one advanced class per month that covers advanced techniques used in fine dining. If you are interested in advanced baking courses, these are also offered on a regular basis. Please feel free to contact us if there is a particular cooking or baking subject you would like to learn about.
Is all the produce home grown?
We have a kitchen herb and vegetable garden which is 100% organic and use produce from the garden when it is in season. Chara is a professionally trained chef learning how to garden as she goes, so we can’t promise fruits and vegetables from our garden year-round. Several varieties of herbs are perennial in Houston and many of the herbs do come straight from the garden.
What is your cancellation policy?
You may cancel your reservation for a full refund if you give 48 hours notice. You may receive a 50% refund with 24 hours notice. We regret that we are unable to give refunds to those who cancel with less than 24 hours notice. Likewise you may reschedule your class with at least 24 hours notice.
Do you offer in-home classes?
No. All of our classes are taught at the Urban Chef facility.
